Honourable members of Scandinavian Parliaments
My name is Olafur Skorrdal, a poet from Reykjavik, Iceland. For many years now, I have criticized the leaders of my country – and I am still at it, even after the elections last April. My politics are not to the left, nor to the right – my politics are to the future.
As you may know, we have had a bigger crises than any western nation has had. Our banking system lies in ruins – even our Central Bank is in really bad shape. Our politicians are not doing a great job; they protect more those who are to blame for all of this, rather than protecting the people they work for. Now, they have made two agreements, between Iceland, UK and the Netherlands, because of the IceSave scandal.
Our friends – our familynations in Scandinavia, have said (or so we are told by our government), that they will not assist Iceland, unless these issues will be resolved. I can understand that, but if those nations knew what has been signed (but not voted on yet, by Althingi), and how the content of this agreement was a secret – even from Althingi it self – they would change their mind and help us fight against such oppression. That is why, honourable members of the Scandinavian parliaments, I write you this letter.
As I understand the content of this agreement, Icelandic resources can – and will – go to either UK or the Netherlands, if Iceland can’t pay this money. We are talking about 750.000.000.000 isk, with 5,5% interest, in an environment where our currency just these last few weeks has made that number bigger by 50.000.000.000 isk. And it still keeps falling, due to Icelandic “former” bankers, that are working with our fishing industry to lower our currency rate, just to make a bit more money. All of this is done with the knowledge of our government, and nothing is done to stop this – nor is anything done to get assets from those liable for this IceSave fiasco; they are still cruising on their yachts, or flying in their private jets, spending the money they stole from people in UK and the Netherlands – and Germany, and Iceland.
There are two investigations ongoing, because of the financial meltdown last October. One by Althing, three people are heading that investigation – and a special prosecutor, assisted by Eva Joly, a Norwegian/French investigator, that the people trusts. Most of us, anyway. All is done to discredit her, and one member of the investigators board of Althingi – Ms. Sigriður Benediktsdóttir, PhD in economics from Yale University, working as Associate Chair at Yale. Both of those women have shown that they are working for the Icelandic public, and want to do the best they can to find out what happened. Even members of parties currently in the Government, has tried to discredit the work of Eva Joly.
Enclosed, I send you those two agreements, between Iceland, UK and the Netherlands. And ask you this: Would you agree such an agreement, hide it from both parliament and the public? If the answer is “no”; can I, ask you to stand with my country – with my people – against such an oppression, against such bullying of two big countries, that I thought were a part of our family of nations? My government has only one goal – emerge with EU; and they are ready to enslave the whole nation, just to get there. That is not fair, specially if we think of the future of my country – our children and their children.
I beg of you, to take a look at these papers I send you – and honestly ask with your heart: Would I do this to the future of my country – to the future of my children? And I know, honourable members of the Scandinavian Parliaments – our family – you will come to the same conclusion as I have; this is wrong.
In hope,
